I read that there are programs that are using cell phones as ESL tools. I cannot recall where I saw the article, but your blog post reminded me of it. If I recall where I had seen it I will be sure to post it.

I agree that having to continually check back for updates does not work over time. By using RSS feeds for blog postings and comments, you can get rid of the time consuming task of always checking a blog for updates. Deciding to use a blog or a private discussion board depends upon the purpose of the writing task. They each have their value.

Bill, on Digitally Speaking says, "Classrooms are often simplistic places where students are prepared for today, but completely unprepared for tomorrow. Digital experiences are almost non-existant, leaving our students lost in a school environment that is uninteresting and ineffective."

I found this quote to be compelling. I wonder, though, if he isn't overstating the case a bit--to the extent that he leaves the impression that digital experiences just are by their nature interesting and effective while non-digital experience are by their nature the opposite.

I, too, found this article helpful. Like Norma who posted on 1/28/09, I especially liked the pro and con section. For me, the conversational quality of a face to face classroom cannot be fully captured because of the asynchronous nature of blogging. By the time someone posts a reply, the original author may not even bother to check back. We want to keep driving new conversations, and continually looking back to archived blogs may defeat that purpose. How to strike a balance? And I also want to echo Norma's question about the advantages of (public) blogs versus (private, password protected) online course management systems like Blackboard and Angel.

What a great tool you have given me with the "Wayback Machine." I have always bookmarked important websites for my students to use during research. Now I have a way to find some of my favorites from the past that have since become dead end links.

I have found the conferences I have attended over the years to be very inspirational as well. Will Richardson's definition of "Network Literacy" interests me most. The ability to use personal learning networks will provide new generations of students with an exciting path toward life long learning.

One of the main benefits of this conference was the motivation it gave me to keep pushing these shifts to my district. Everyone there already knows my feelings about technology, but these workshops reminded me that I have to push harder. The 2 from our district who attended with me are working on a wiki to present to our staff with as much material as we can from what we experienced.

That sounds like a pretty amazing conference. You probably had to soak in a lot of information (as conferences are like that), but you listed some key points from Will Richardson which was really nice. I've found to really agree with a lot of his philosophies on Web 2.0. The key points you listed (especially the last three) would be good to share with students before embarking on a read/write web assignment; they will then understand why they are expected to do the assignment. I'm sure you consider yourself fortunate to have seen him speak!
