Bring up cell phones in a classroom, and guaranteed everyone joins in the discussion. Most of our districts have restrictive policies which frankly aren’t working very well. Students have become experts in texting while the phones are in their pockets or behind books. There is a growing belief that instead of trying to restrict them from our rooms, that we need to recognize their value and teach students a responsible way to use them. They already provide a variety of tools for the students to use and that list keeps growing. Evan Abbey recently had a blog posting that stated it was time that districts begin to realize that they are valuable tools and we need to be working with students on how to use them appropriately in an educational setting. His post contains pros and cons of their usage along with other interesting links on the topic. Read about a school in Texas that has all of their 5th graders using cell phones in the classroom as teaching tools. Is your district ready to shift its focus?

“Edmodo is a private microblogging platform that teachers and students can use to send notes, links, files, alerts, assignments, and events to each other.”

Teachers can set up a group for their classroom and each student is given a code to access the group. No email addresses are needed. I’ve never used Edmodo before, but it definitely is worth looking into as an alternative to separate email accounts.

I use Google Reader to bring in all of my RSS feeds which consist of different blogs, newspapers, and other resources. This is one tool that I do use daily and it sure beats having to go out rechecking websites for updates. At Will Richardson’s workshop that I attended at METC, Will described how to add news searches and blog searches into your Google Reader as feeds. If you have a news topic that you are interested in, go to news.google.com and type it in. After it brings up its results, you can then subscribe to it as an RSS feed. You can also do the same with topics that would be mentioned in blogs. Go to blogsearch.google.com, type in your topic, and subscribe. Easy way to have Google searching the vast world of the web looking for topics and news that you are interested in.

One thing that METC accomplished was to reinforce over and over that we have to change our way of teaching and reaching our present day students. Meg Ormiston presented the keynote entitled Culture Clash! Wired Kids in Text Driven Classrooms. The remark that she stressed many times is that we are boring our kids and “worksheeting” them to death in our classrooms. We have all of these engaging creative tools at the click of a mouse and most of us don’t use them to their potential. She then challenged us to use multimedia tools and activities to engage our students and provide alternatives to learning with numerous handouts. Great examples that were shown to us included:

Want to activate schema before your students read All is Quiet on the Western Front – try this.

Think of alternatives to written book report.

Explore Google Lit Trips

Discovery Streaming

So where do I go from here? There were 3 of us from our district who attended the conference and we all came back home filled with new ideas along with stronger beliefs about the need for the read/write web in our curriculums. So we first made a list of requests to our technology committee such as making sure that all computers have access to such programs as Google Earth and Sketch Up along with read/write tools such as blogs and wikis. We are sharing alot with other staff, administration, and hopefully our school board. One of our ways of doing this is by creating a wiki sharing the beliefs, tools, and resources from METC. The world is changing and we can’t be left behind!

For the past 2 days, I have been at the METC tech conference in St. Louis. The workshops so far have been very beneficial! There has been much discussion on how our students need to become proficient with the social networking tools if they are going to become lifelong learners. It is going to be difficult to be successful in this world if you don’t know how to make connections and develop your own learning networks. On Monday my all day workshop was with Will Richardson talking about Network Literacy. Here are a few thoughts from Will that day:

As teachers, we must embrace and use these tools before we move them into our classrooms. We have to show students by our use of them how important they are.

Being able to connect to others is a basic skill like reading and math are.

We assess our students on their information; we don’t teach them knowledge.

Definition of network literacy: The ability to create, grow and navigate personal learning networks in a safe, ethical and effective ways.

Besides lots of conversation on how education has to start moving towards helping students create and grow their own learning networks, I have been exposed to many new tools and ideas to use in the classroom. More on those later!

One of the most helpful weekly newsletters that I receive through my email is from TeachersFirst. TeachersFirst is a large collection of lessons and ideas to use in the classroom along with other resources to support teachers. One of their services is to search out and review resources throughout the web that can be used in the classroom. Each email update contains a list of featured sites which you can quickly skim and investigate further if it is of interest to you. Along with a description of the site, they provide an explanation on how to apply it in your classroom. They also contain many interactive lessons which can be used on interactive whiteboards along with ideas for integrating Web 2.0 tools. One of the featured sites this week is 5 Sources for Free and Legal Images which can be used on your blogs and wikis. The best part of TeachersFirst – it’s free!
